Damn Southern Boy!

A comic I did a while ago that I kind of forgot about until now. This was also when I was playing around with giving Alister and Edgar a Southern accent and how to translate that phonetically to dialogue without making it irritating to read (like the mole dialogue from Redwall, if anyone is familiar with that series).

I also wanted to experiment with doing a kind of rough, sketchy shading with brush pens. In fact this whole thing is kind of unpolished.

Also my friend asked me (after the fact) as to why Alister couldn’t have just gone inside and bought the chips himself.

And the answer is, I don’t know. Make up your own answer.

Character Development Meme

My friend and I made a small character development meme for personal practice. I decided to put this up in case anyone else wants to do it, as well. Since this is mostly for character development, you can make these comics as sketchy or as prettily rendered as you want.

Character Development Comics- (to make it extra challenging, limit yourself to 4-10 panels)

+Interview style- Have your characters…

1.) introduce themselves
2.) introduce their friends
3.) describe their feelings about their family
4.) (if you have a large cast) describe which characters they dislike and why they dislike them
5.) describe what they would do if they suddenly won a million dollars
6.) describe their feelings about their jobs
7.) what they find attractive and/or desirable in a significant other.
8.) describe their own lifestyle
9.) describe how physically attractive they think they are
10.) describe their overall likes/dislikes

+Situations for your characters…

11.) Your characters are guests and they are served by their hosts their most hated food. What do they do? Do they refuse to eat it? Do they pretend to eat it? Do they “grin & bare it”?

12.) What would happen if they got drunk/high/any other form of intoxication? How would it happen? Ex. If your character is a teetoaller, someone tricks them into getting high. How would they react afterwards?

13.) What would happen if they had to be stuck in a doctor’s waiting room with a highly irritating individual?

14.) Friend brings them a shitty gift. How do they react?

15.) Someone makes fun of your character? What does the mocker make fun of them for? How do they react?

16.) Your character, for some reason or another, has to speak in front of an audience? How do they react?

17.) They have to choose what to do with friends that day? Do they plan ahead? Take control? Impulsively suggest something?

18.) You’re characters are telling ghost stories. How do they react? What stories to they tell? Do they get scared? Do they have NERVES OF STEEL?

19.) They pass a hitchhiker on the highway. Do they keep on driving? Pick them up? If they pick them up, what do they talk about?

20.) What do they do if one of their friends, family members, etc. gets put in jail? What do they do?

+Characters have their own unique mannerisms and ways of reacting to various social situations.

Some Silly Pictures

This was originally a panel sketch from a comic that I didn’t really complete. I really liked this particular expression, though, so I quickly rendered it out. I think Alister was excited about finding a tacky black velvet painting or something.

I hate, hate, HATE the Ginga Denstsu Weed style. >:I

… so I decided to draw my characters in that style.

Raleigh Phillips and Alister Faces

Here’s a quick colored sketch of Raleigh Phillips. He’s going to be Edgar’s good friend and essentially they’ll be those two people who are so similar in terms of appearance and personality that it get’s rather eerie (of course there’ll be some definite differences between the two, such as Edgar despises children of any sort and Raleigh is generally pretty good with children and has two nieces he’s particularly fond of and so on.)

I’m still pretty much on the works of developing his character further since he’s a pretty new character.

He was a character that was originally developed for a D&D campaign, but I ended up enjoying character a lot, so I decided to adapt him for the comic.

Also, he’s noticeably British and has a bad leg.

Just a doodle of Raleigh’s nervous habit of biting his nails.

Very rough height comparison between Edgar and Raleigh (also testing out a slightly different style of shirt for Raleigh, which I didn’t really like so I just kind of went back to the original design). Edgar is shorter then Raleigh, in keeping with the trend of Edgar and Alister (for some unknown and odd reason) of being the shortest men in the comic, as seen here- http://quaidezmaster.deviantart.com/art/Character-Height-Chart-190702176

Edgar being horrified by Raleigh eating black pudding (YOU GET IT?! BECAUSE HE’S BRITISH!). Honestly, considering all the nasty shit dogs eat, Edgar really shouldn’t be so horrified by black pudding. I think Edgar fails pretty badly at being a dog.

And I’ll now just end on some silly Alister expressions.
